Ethan Springett, 17, from Sheviock, Torpoint
Marine production suppliers Marine Co was worried by the responsibility of taking on a new member of staff when former student Ethan approached them for work.
The small Torpoint firm had a team of five and, while they wanted to bring young blood into the business, the current economic uncertainty made them reluctant to take the risk.
But Cornwall Marine Network was able to develop an Apprenticeship for Ethan that met Marine Co's needs, plus support his salary and training costs.
Chris Dinham, Managing Director of Marine Co, said: "Cornwall Marine Network's Apprenticeship scheme gave us the confidence to take on Ethan and invest in both his and Marine Co's future. It was important for us to work with a marine organisation on Ethan's Apprenticeship as we feel part of Cornwall Marine Network and that they understand our requirements."
Meanwhile Ethan is delighted to be getting a guaranteed salary while developing hands-on production skills. "I'm learning about rigging and splicing and the older, more experienced guys are teaching me loads," he said. "Doing this Apprenticeship means I can now plan for my future."
