Niall Dungey, 20, from Delabole
Former slate sign-maker Niall had been unemployed for four months before being taken on as an Apprentice laminator by yacht-builders Cornish Crabbers in Rock.
Now he is enjoying working alongside some of the top laminators in the South West, while acquiring skills and qualifications that will make him a real asset to his new employer.
He said: "I hated being stuck indoors all day while looking for work. I read about Cornwall Marine Network's Apprenticeship scheme on the web and was amazed and delighted at how quickly I got started, from applying and having the interviews to beginning work. It's a great opportunity and I'm really enjoying the work, plus having the job security."
Peter Thomas, Cornish Crabbers' Sales Manager, confirmed that taking on Niall as an Apprentice has been a prudent investment.
He said: "There's a real shortage of skilled laminators in the South West and to train someone up to the required level takes a lot of time. The Apprenticeship scheme reduces the financial cost and allows for the time needed for this training process.
"Niall will become a valuable asset to Cornish Crabbers, while also acquiring skills and qualifications that will stand him in good stead for the future."
