This is a picture of assessor John Habgood celebrating the success of Ventura Lago Fernandez gaining his Level 3 NVQ in Boatbuilding at Ocean Yacht Company.
John and Spanish-born Ventura used to work together in the Caribbean a decade ago and recently met up when John, now a Cornwall Marine Network (CMN) assessor, went to assess his ‘candidate' who turned out to be his old colleague.
John approached CMN 12 months ago and discussed his prospects. He has years of experience as a shipwright and was looking towards teaching as a vocation. He did an NVQ himself with CMN in Boatbuilding and then progressed to doing his Assessors Award. John has reached his goal as he has done his PTTLS qualification and is now teaching for CMN.
He said: "I worked with Ventura in Trinidad, on board a west country trading ketch named 'Irene'. Ventura was cruising the Caribbean with his family on their yacht. He worked as a shipwright for several months on 'Irene' during their time in Trinidad."
