Apprenticeships 2009

Apprenticeships are high quality, work-based training programmes for young people who want to develop their prospects and career.

Thanks to a new training fund, we are able to offer your company the financial support of £3,000 in the first year, plus £1,000 in year 2 and a further £1,000 in year 3 if you take on an apprentice.

Also, this year we have a new initiative whereby we can even employ the apprentice on your behalf which significantly reduces financial risk to your company.

We will still be able to supply apprentices who fulfil any of the different pathways within 'boatbuilding', which include:

1. Yacht and Boat Equipment Installation
2. Yacht and Boat Woodwork/Outfitting
3. Yacht and Boat Coating/Finishing
4. Yacht and Boat Building Servicing, Maintenance & Repair
5. Composites
6. Electrical Installation and Maintenance
7. Pipework
8. Structural Steelwork
9. Mechanical Installation and Maintenance
10. Woodwork/Outfitting
11. Interior Finishing
12. Sheet Metalwork
13. Manual Welding
14. Welding Machine Operating
15. Rigging
16. Surface Preparation
17. Paint Application

One day per week they will learn the theory skills at either Cornwall College Camborne or Falmouth Marine School.

When you decide to take on an Apprentice, you will:

  • be supporting your apprentice to gain new qualifications
  • be supporting them to gain industry standard training
  • help them gain new knowledge and Key Skills
  • give them a chance to build a career
  • ensure we develop the skills to meet the needs required in Cornwall over the next 10 years when many existing skilled boat builders will retire

The full apprenticeship lasts 3 years and is expected to be completed by 24 years old.

Apprenticeships are now becoming more and more popular again. Last year, there were more than 255,000 young people in England training in over 150 different types of Apprenticeship.

The Apprentice package also includes work on Key Skills such as Literacy, Numeracy and IT, as well as Working with Others, Problem Solving and Improving Own Learning and Performance. Key Skills are designed to complement the skills and knowledge acquired and to improve general work skills.

Please email anne-marie.carroll@cornwallmarine.net or telephone Anne-Marie on 01326 211382 with your expression of interest to proceed, prior to a meeting with the Training Manager.
