Cornwall Marine Academy Project Officer - Cornwall Marine Network


Cornwall Marine Academy supports young people to understand the career opportunities available in the local marine sector, and supports them with training and vocational work experiences to increase their prospects of gaining jobs, including apprenticeships.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as Cornwall Marine Academy Project Officer. As post holder, you will be responsible for assisting the delivery of Cornwall Marine Academy projects across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly which develop and deliver projects that create clear progression paths for Young People (aged 14-24 years) from education into employment with Marine employers. The post holder will also be responsible for supporting the recruitment of apprentices for the Cornwall Apprenticeship Agency.
The Cornwall Marine Academy and the Cornwall Apprenticeship Agency are both wholly owned subsidiary companies of Cornwall Marine Network.


Key responsibilities:

To assist the Cornwall Marine Academy Team Leader in the delivery of CMA funded projects; ensuring that all day-to-day operations of the service are efficient, timely and accurate. Specifically:

•    To provide support to the delivery success of the Cornwall Marine Academy, to the strategic and economic benefit of Cornwall Marine Network members.
•    Improve the employability skills of young people by encouraging them to participate in vocational work experience and programmes of study that improve their employment prospects.
•    To support raising awareness of local Marine careers to Young People (14 to 24 years) including developing the use and effectiveness of communications including social media and attendance at careers events.
•    To help increase the engagement of schools and teachers with the local Marine sector businesses.

To support the Cornwall Apprenticeship Agency in its effective recruitment service of Apprentices; mainly focused on young people (16 to 24 years). Responsibility will include:

•    Supporting the CMN Skills Brokers to advertise and promote Apprenticeship vacancies, including shortlisting applications and conducting initial telephone interviews of selected applicants.  
•    Updating a business on the progress of recruitment and arranging formal Apprenticeship interviews with the employers.
•    Providing unsuccessful candidates with feedback – including signposting to other training and/or young people focussed programmes.

Salary £17,500 to £20,500 pa, subject to experience.

37.5 hours per week, permanent contract

Bench Joiner/Lead hand - Cockwells

We are currently looking for a fully qualified and experienced Bench Joiner/Lead hand

The key skills required for this role are:
•    Time served apprentice, or NVQ / City& Guilds qualifications in bench joinery or equivalent
•    Experience in modern woodworking machinery and hand tools
•    Experience in reading drawings, templates & written instructions
•    Be able to produce a bespoke range of joinery, from Cabinet door and frame sets, fielded panels and architectural mouldings, curved hand rails, and fitted joinery
•     An ability to work to tight deadlines
•    An ability to   use problem-solving and critical thinking skills
•     Be able to work independently or as part of a team
•    Overseeing joinery projects and a team of joiners on a daily basis
•    Ensure the quality of work is completed to the highest degree

Job Experience:
•    successful candidates will be skilled and experienced team leaders with strong skills in carpentry and  joinery

Marine engineer/electrician - Cockwells

We are currently looking for a fully qualified and experienced Marine Engineer/Electrician
 
The key skills required for this role are:
•    Mechanical fitter of all general marine systems
•    Experience with shaft drive, out drive and jet drive installation is preferable
•    Experience of diesel engines
•    Fitting all mechanical components
•    Reading and interpreting technical drawings
•    Experience with new build and refit projects
•    Design and oversee testing, installation, commissioning, and/or diagnostics and repair of marine apparatus and equipment
•    Install, or direct the installation of, engines or systems from detailed drawings and schematics
•    Evaluate operation of marine equipment during acceptance trials and shakedown cruises
•    Confer with superiors and design personnel in order to clarify or resolve problems, and to develop or modify designs
•    Investigate and observe tests on machinery and equipment for compliance with standards
•    Conduct environmental, operational, or performance tests on marine machinery and equipment
•    Prepare technical reports for use by engineering, management, or sales personnel
•    Maintain records of engineering department activities, including expense records and details of equipment maintenance and repairs
•    Servicing of electrical, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water and sewage systems
•    Work in a clean yet productive manner
•    Perform services and winterisation to inboard diesel engines
•    Good working knowledge and experience of working with marine electrical and electronic systems
•    Ability to work with 12v systems
•    Knowledge of Raymarine and Canbus equipment useful but not essential

Boat Build Project Manager - Cockwells

We are a growing company, currently going through a period of change due to site re-development and process enhancement, so someone with a flexible and pragmatic mindset will be a prerequisite for the role!
Ideally, you will from a manufacturing background, experience in the Marine industry will be a significant advantage but is not essential.


The Boat Build Project Manager will be accountable for:
• Managing the project through each stage of the project lifecycle; Initiation – Build – Delivery
• Managing the build to time & budget
• Ensure that all Quality checks have been actioned and evidenced
• Managing the teams working on the project & identifying resources required
• Managing Dependencies with other supply teams i.e. laminating, engineering, paint finishing, joinery
• Ensure that all Materials required are on site when needed.  Identify materials required then, plan purchase in a timely way in conjunction with purchasing team.
Skills required for the role will be:-
• Must have previous Project Management Experience
• Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Project software
• Ideally, you will have a Project Management qualification such as Prince 2, PMP, APMP or equivalent.
• Must be experienced in PMO reporting i.e. status reporting, risks & issues escalation, milestone reporting etc.
• Must have experience in Leading and Managing people, with the confidence to give direction to a team of boat builders and drive delivery to deadlines
• Ideally you’ll be from a manufacturing/production background & comfortable in those environments
• Must be experienced in planning and setting up projects from start, running workshops to illicit input from subject matter experts, to create a plan
• Must be Highly PC literate in all Office applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint as standard
• Previous experience in Quality Management oversight or process management will be an advantage

Design Draughtsperson - Cockwells

We are currently looking for a fully qualified and experienced Design Draughtsperson
The Cockwells design team is looking for an efficient Design Draughtsperson to produce construction drawings for the yard team.
An essential skill for this role is to be able to use Rhino3D and Solidworks software and be confident in producing a wide range of 2D drawings and 3D models for a variety of components required in the build of a Cockwells launch.
Build drawings will need to be of the quality to go out onto the shop floor or be sent to subcontractors to work from. This could include 3D models being sent away for 3D printing or CNC cutting. The candidate must be happy to work with others and to an existing drawing system.
An important role the employee will be responsible for will be to update drawings of components that have previously been built by going into the yard and checking them for themselves.
Previous experience in the marine industry is desirable but not essential.

Cornwall Marine Network requires a proactive Skills Broker Executive to engage with our marine employer members and support them to identify the current and emerging skills needs of their staff team. The role will also provide key support to the delivery of Marine and Retail employer engagement and Apprenticeship creation for the Developing Skills for Business (DS4B) ESF Employer-led capacity building programme. This ESF funded programme, partnered with employers, aims to fill the future skill shortage gaps in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Key responsibilities will be:
•    To represent CMN at meetings businesses and at networking events, acting as an Ambassador for CMN and the DS4B programme in order to self-generate business leads and arrange company visits.
•    To proactively engage with individual SME businesses and undertake a systematic assessment of each company’s skills and training requirements, including promoting the benefits and return on investment of employing apprentices.
•    In a brokerage capacity, to liaise with accredited Training Providers to identify and implement bespoke skills and Apprenticeship training solutions to meet the needs of the company.
•    Provide employer referrals to CMN subsidiary company, the Cornwall Apprenticeship Agency
•    To contribute significantly towards the outputs, outcomes and agreed targets as part of the DS4B Employer-Led project.

The role requires someone who is highly motivated with a passion for providing excellent customer service and is proficient at building and sustaining relationships with employers. Experience and knowledge of working with SMEs across the marine sector and/or with retail is desirable but not essential.

RECEPTIONIST WITH ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES (MATERNITY COVER) - Falmouth Boat Co. Ltd

This role is available for immediate start before then becoming cover for a maternity leave which is due to start 1 August 2018. The role is set for a minimum of six months.

About us:

Falmouth Boat Co. is a privately owned small boatyard based in Flushing, Falmouth in Cornwall. With a turnover slightly in excess of £1m and a staff base of 30, our primary activities are based around the service and repair of all water borne craft up to 100ft and 100 tonnes.

Our most regular market is 30-50ft yachts and leisure craft for refit and repair, complemented with commercial craft servicing up to 60ft. Our leisure clients range from a spectrum of self-employed tradesmen and wealthy professionals to retired locals. Our commercial clients are primarily local and range from harbour authorities to towage companies. We are very proud to be one of the few repair yards in the country appointed to undertake repair work on RNLI craft with whom we work closely.

We have limited facilities afloat so all our clients choose to come to us rather than feeling obliged through a mooring lay-up arrangement. We also undertake a large amount of insurance repair work. This is more often than not the first time that new clients meet us and post repairs, hopefully to return in the future. This is the biggest growth area of our customer base.

The majority of our activities are based in Falmouth, and on our own site, however, we are developing an offsite and International support team with several of our clients – most notably in Europe. Our USP in such matters is the fact that UK clients take comfort in dealing with a UK company under UK law on their craft wherever it may be – this is a growing area of our business.

Marine Engine Operators Licence (MEOL) position - A&P Falmouth

Falmouth Towage is situated within A&P Falmouth Docks and is part of the A&P group.


We are looking to recruit motivated and hardworking individuals to assist our Chief Engineers on our 3 local Harbour tugs.


The role involves working anti-social hours and applicants must be prepared to work outside and in all weather conditions.


Job requirements:
•    The applicant will be required to be in possession of all STCW short course tickets including recent amendments
•    Minimum Qualification would need to be a Marine Engine Operatros Licence (MEOL)
•    Hold a vaild ENG1 medical
•    Experience of Harbour tugs and vessels up to 750KW would be preferred although full training will be given

Marine Engineer Vacancy - UK Docks Mashfords

UK Docks Mashfords based at Cremyll in Cornwall are seeking a full time Marine Engineer to join their team. This is a permanent position working 40 hours per week, 07.30am to 16.15pm Monday to Friday, and overtime will be required to meet contract deadlines when necessary.

 

Duties:
• To service marine engines and propulsion systems
• To install mechanical and hydraulic systems
• To test and commission installations, ensuring equipment is operational and satisfactory to all requirements
• To work on all vessel types up to 400 tonnes including RIBS
• All work to be carried out to a high standard

 

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
• Must have a Marine Engineering background with a minimum of 5 years experience
• Would be expected to work on MOD sites when required
• Must pass MOD security clearance checks to qualify for a security pass
• Must have a full driving licence
• Ability to work alone and as part of a team
• Knowledge of Electrical Installations would be an advantage

Operations Manager - Fishy Filaments

Reporting to - CEO

 

Type & Location - Permanent, full time vacancy located at Newlyn in Cornwall, UK

Availability - Expected start date in April 2018

Starting Salary - £25,000 - £30,000

 

The Company - Fishy Filaments Ltd is a start-up that takes used fishing gear and up-cycles it into high value consumables for 3D printing. We work with the fishing industry to help reduce the environmental impact of its waste plastics.

 

The Role - You will work with the CEO to build this new company’s production capacity, bring new products to market and lead a growing production team for which you will take day-to-day responsibility.

 

Skills & Competencies
• Technical experience in plastic extrusion technologies, polymer blending, QA/QC and managing industrial processes are absolute requirements.
• Experience of polymer recycling in an industrial context, operational R&M, developing standards based operations (e.g. ISO) and safe systems of work are all highly desirable.
• Existing safety qualifications (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH) will be influential as you will help build the corporate culture needed to support safe but rapid growth.
• Continuous improvement of production processes and compliance with the highest quality and environmental standards will be carried out with the CEO as we build the company ethos together.
• Both mechanical and electronic systems will be in use, so hands-on problem solving of technology issues should be part of your DNA but manual handling of bulky materials in all weathers will routinely be required as we feed those technologies during production.
• You will become the go-to point for all day-to-day production and delivery issues, including order scheduling and customer queries, be able to prioritise those issues and act decisively.
• Experience in team building, pastoral management and staff training are requirements.
• Managing tight quality, stock and budgetary controls will underlie measurement of your success, so very good numeracy and English literacy are essential.
Knowledge or understanding of polymer-based 3D printing technologies and/or CAD systems is a strong bonus, but this role is primarily for a quality-oriented production manager who can see the
bigger commercial picture and is willing to step outside their comfort zone.


The Challenge - Start-ups are inherently risky and your input will be vital in our shared success as we bring our first products to market then expand both our operations and our product portfolio.
We have a 5-year R&D program in front of us so an understanding of how to balance the needs of day-to-day production and quality control against the drive to innovate will be a challenge.
We will be breaking new ground almost every day in the first year or two, so the challenges faced will be a big part of the reward. We'll pay too of course, but don't expect an easy ride in a comfy chair. In a small team this will be as much about cold, wet mornings in gloves & steel toe-caps as warm, dry offices at the cutting edge of sustainable technology.

Summary - This is a full time position for those with existing permissions to work in the UK. As the operations team builder and leader you will set the tone in the day-to-day operations of a growing company. As we grow we'll need dirt-under-the-fingernails grafters pulling in the same direction as logistics wizards and 3D printing gurus, and all working to deliver a world-leading product direct to customers around the globe on time and at a consistently high quality.
There is a lot that could go wrong in this role, but a lot to be very satisfied with when you go home at the end of the day. You will be instrumental in how fast and how far we grow. But more than that, you will be doing things better, cleaner, more efficiently, with more local benefit and with less environmental impact. Employer: Well established Cornish Ferry Operator based on The River Fal.

Salary range: £16,500 to £27,500 depending on background, experience, and qualifications. 

Location of work:  Falmouth and surrounding area in the County of Cornwall.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:   MCA Boat Masters Level 2 tier 2 or a willingness to train up from Day Skipper / Local Harbour Authority Licence. GCSE grade D or above in English and Maths.

A brief job description

The successful candidate will have the ability to take control of or be trained in all operational aspects of a commercial ferry operation. A background in the maritime sector would be an advantage but should not put off any prospective candidate provided they exhibit reasonable aptitude in respect of typical tasks arising from the operation of a Ferry business.

Tasks arising from operations will include but not are limited to: 

Maritime Safety Rules , Vessel Certification and Coding, Budgeting for Key performance indicators in respect of passenger numbers, Domestic Safety and management thereof .

This is a varied role working on a wide range of new build fit out and refurbishment projects for commercial and leisure vessels.
