About us:
Falmouth Boat Co. is the service brand of Falmouth Boat Construction ltd.  We are a privately owned small boatyard based on the south coast of the south west of the UK in Flushing, Falmouth in Cornwall.
With a turnover slightly in excess of £1m and a staff base of 30, our primary activities are based around the service and repair of all water borne craft up to 100ft and 100 tonnes.  Our most regular market is 30-50ft yachts and leisure craft for refit and repair, complemented with commercial craft servicing up to 60ft.
Our leisure clients range from a spectrum of self-employed tradesmen and wealthy professionals to retired locals.
Our commercial clients are primarily local and range from harbour authorities to towage companies. We are very proud to be one of the few repair yards in the country appointed to undertake repair work on RNLI craft with whom we work closely.
We have limited facilities afloat so all our clients choose to come to us rather than feeling obliged through a mooring lay-up arrangement.
We also undertake a large amount of insurance repair work.  This is more often than not the first time that new clients meet us and post repairs, hopefully to return in the future.   This is the biggest growth area of our customer base.
The majority of our activities are based in Falmouth, and on our own site, however, we are developing an offsite and International support team with several of our clients – most notably in Europe.  Our USP in such matters is the fact that UK clients take comfort in dealing with a UK company under UK law on their craft wherever it may be – this is a growing area of our business.
In July 2013, the company changed hands to the current ownership. Having historically suffered from a significant lack of investment and poor profitability. This situation has step changed since on the back of the business recovery.

Operations Manager - Fishy Filaments

Reporting to - CEO

Type & Location - Permanent, full time vacancy located at Newlyn in Cornwall, UK

Availability - Expected start date in April 2018

Starting Salary - £25,000 - £30,000

The Company - Fishy Filaments Ltd is a start-up that takes used fishing gear and up-cycles it into high value consumables for 3D printing. We work with the fishing industry to help reduce the environmental impact of its waste plastics.

The Role - You will work with the CEO to build this new company’s production capacity, bring new products to market and lead a growing production team for which you will take day-to-day responsibility.

Skills & Competencies
• Technical experience in plastic extrusion technologies, polymer blending, QA/QC and managing industrial processes are absolute requirements.
• Experience of polymer recycling in an industrial context, operational R&M, developing standards based operations (e.g. ISO) and safe systems of work are all highly desirable.
• Existing safety qualifications (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH) will be influential as you will help build the corporate culture needed to support safe but rapid growth.
• Continuous improvement of production processes and compliance with the highest quality and environmental standards will be carried out with the CEO as we build the company ethos together.
• Both mechanical and electronic systems will be in use, so hands-on problem solving of technology issues should be part of your DNA but manual handling of bulky materials in all weathers will routinely be required as we feed those technologies during production.
• You will become the go-to point for all day-to-day production and delivery issues, including order scheduling and customer queries, be able to prioritise those issues and act decisively.
• Experience in team building, pastoral management and staff training are requirements.
• Managing tight quality, stock and budgetary controls will underlie measurement of your success, so very good numeracy and English literacy are essential.
Knowledge or understanding of polymer-based 3D printing technologies and/or CAD systems is a strong bonus, but this role is primarily for a quality-oriented production manager who can see the
bigger commercial picture and is willing to step outside their comfort zone.

The Challenge - Start-ups are inherently risky and your input will be vital in our shared success as we bring our first products to market then expand both our operations and our product portfolio.
We have a 5-year R&D program in front of us so an understanding of how to balance the needs of day-to-day production and quality control against the drive to innovate will be a challenge.
We will be breaking new ground almost every day in the first year or two, so the challenges faced will be a big part of the reward. We'll pay too of course, but don't expect an easy ride in a comfy chair. In a small team this will be as much about cold, wet mornings in gloves & steel toe-caps as warm, dry offices at the cutting edge of sustainable technology.

The Rewards - You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are part of something that is both locally important and world-leading.

At FFL our cutting edge product and process will be our primary means of communication, but there will be ample opportunity for direct community co-operation and educational outreach, and if you
have new ideas then you will be expected to bring them to the table.
The location on Mount’s Bay is stunning. Some of the UK’s best surf spots are only 20 minutes drive and you can catch a wave just a few hundred meters away when the swell is right. With one of England’s busiest fishing ports next door there is a real buzz in the air so if you love fresh fish then you couldn’t find a better place to be.

22 days paid leave plus 8 Bank Holidays and a 37.5 hour working week mean that you’ll have time to enjoy life outside work. We recognise that a work/life balance doesn’t mean just your life but, as a start-up, we will need a little flexibility from you too.

Summary - This is a full time position for those with existing permissions to work in the UK. As the operations team builder and leader you will set the tone in the day-to-day operations of a growing company. As we grow we'll need dirt-under-the-fingernails grafters pulling in the same direction as logistics wizards and 3D printing gurus, and all working to deliver a world-leading product direct to customers around the globe on time and at a consistently high quality.
There is a lot that could go wrong in this role, but a lot to be very satisfied with when you go home at the end of the day. You will be instrumental in how fast and how far we grow. But more than that, you will be doing things better, cleaner, more efficiently, with more local benefit and with less environmental impact. This is a business for profit but with a real, visible purpose.

Apply with a CV and a covering e-mail to ian@fishyfilaments.com.
Details of two references will be required and taken up after a real world interview.
No agencies.
